Obituary
Mrs. Mattie Burgess, daughter of the late Issac and Alifar Barr Julious was born on May 6, 1943, in Lake City, South Carolina. She was called into eternal rest on Monday, September 18, 2023, at MUSC Hospital in Florence, South Carolina.
Mattie was a graduate of Chavis High School in Hemingway, South Carolina. At an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of Saint James Baptist Church in Johnsonville, South Carolina.
Mattie was united in holy matrimony to Dr. Reverend Eugene Burgess. This union was blessed with five children, Eugene Jr, Robert, Mary, Glenda, and Olin Jean.
Mattie worked at Wellman Industries until her retirement. For many years, she served on the Baptist Finance Committee for the Williamsburg Missionary Union. She was a proud member of the Vox Chapter 250 order of Eastern Star.
She is preceded in death by her parents Isaac and Alifar Barr Julious, Two children: Glenda Arizmendas, Olin Jean Burgess.
Those left to cherish her memories: Dr. Reverend Eugene Burgess, two sons: Eugene Burgess, Jr., of Columbia, SC, Robert Burgess of Baltimore, Maryland; One daughter: Mary (Leroy) Taylor of Hemingway, SC. Two Sisters; Carrie (James) Williams; Lillie (Cecil) Fulmore of Teaneck, NJ; One brother Robert Julious of Hemingway, SC., One special cousin Christine Singletary; A host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
