Vergie Mae Montgomery

Sunset: February 4, 2022

The late Mrs. Vergie Mae Montgomery entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 4, 2022, in Brooklyn, New York, after a brief illness. She was born March 4, 1944, in Lake City, SC, the eldest daughter of the late Mrs. Lizzie Milton Davis and Henry Montgomery.

Vergie attended Carver High School in Lake City, SC, after graduating high school at the early age of 18; she moved to New York City, where she met the love of her life Mr. Clarence Nixon who preceded her in death.

Vergie was always eager to provide a safe place to stay for all family and friends who ventured to New York. She opened her home to many; as a place to reside until they could afford their own place. Family members visiting were always welcome to stay with her until they left to return home. If you knew Vergie then you knew she loved God, her children, her family, music, and BINGO! Part of our village is gone, and a limb has fallen from our family tree that can never be replaced. We all will miss you dearly until the day comes that we’re together again.

She was preceded in death by her son Mr. Gregory Lynn Montgomery, and two brothers, Mr. Timothy Davis, and Mr. John Davis Jr.

Vergie leaves to cherish her memories three sons: Al-Zeke Plato, Kendu Plato, Anthony Nixon, and Bernard Plato; one daughter: Alashia Tamara Montgomery, and her step-daughter Kim Nixon; four sisters: Mary Brown, Gwendolyn Davis, Linda Brown, Gracie Cooper, an adopted sister Joyce Burgess and two special sisters Shirley McCoy and Portia Douglas; she also leaves behind her Jamestown, SC family of her late husband Clarence who she loved dearly; four sister in-laws: Margaret Nixon, Marie Gant, Doris Burroughs, and Louise Nixon; one brother-in-law: Harry Nixon; six grandchildren: Gloria, Towanna, Doggie Man (Alvin), Kareem, Traylin and Jekai; two great- grandchildren: Londyn and Cairo; a goddaughter/niece Cosima Milton; godson/nephew Anthony Davis and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
