Mrs. Thelma Henry passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at the age of 89 at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center. She was born January 11, 1931 in Williamsburg County to Jack McClam and Maggie Hanna. In 1947, she married the love of her life, William “Vander” Henry and to this union was born three sons and one daughter. Vander and Thelma were inseparable until his death in 2005. She also helped raise her baby sister, Reatha, as her own.
She received her education at the Beulah Community school in Williamsburg County, SC. After getting married, she became a homemaker and worked on the farm along side her husband and children for many years.
Thelma was a Christian woman who loved God and showed love and kindness to everyone she met. Her smile and laugh will always be remembered by those who knew her. Attending church and worshiping God were very important in her life. After getting married, she attended Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Cades, SC and St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church in Cades, SC. Later, she became a faithful member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Lake City, SC. She enjoyed singing on the choir and while her husband played the guitar. He could often be heard saying, “Sing Selma.”
Thelma was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, William “Vander” Henry; a son, William Henry, Jr.; a sister she reared as her own, Reatha Bostic; two additional sisters, Halley Q. McCutcheon and Lillie Mae Graham; three brothers, Johnson McCutcheon, Leroy McCutcheon, and Willie McCutcheon, Sr.
To cherish her memory, she leaves behind a loving daughter, Maggie Mae “Sadie” Henry, of the home; two sons, John William “WJ” Henry, Lake City, SC and Lamar “Lee” Henry, Coward, SC; a grandson, Minister Fredrick (Tredina) Cameron, his three children; a sister-in-law, Alberta McCutcheon, Lake City, SC; a special nephew, Roosevelt “JW” (Laura Ann) Wallace, of the home; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
