John “Rush” Burgess, son of the late Jacob Jonah Burgess and Marie Wheeler Burgess, was born April 21, 1934, in Cades, SC. He entered eternal rest on October 31, 2020. He was educated in the Williamsburg County Schools. John was a member of Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Hebron, SC. John worked as a farmer in Wauchula, FL, and Hebron, SC.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Eliza Jane Gamble and Leora Burgess; two brothers: Joshua Burgess and Jimmie Lee Burgess. He leaves to cherish his memories: great-nephews and kids who he was with every day that was like his own: Keenan, Zayden, Jaden, and Baby Haleigh all of the home; special nephews: Charles Burgess (Fuzzy), Jerry Burgess (Eie-Eie); three special nieces: Candy McFadden, Josephine Burgess and Shirley Wilson (R.I.P.); a niece whom he raised as his daughter, Victoria Burgess whom he called “hammerhead” and Andre “Bubba” Montgomery all of the home, whom he was with every day until his time was near; Sisters: Geneva
Burgess, Mary Burgess, and Dianne Burgess all of Lake City, SC and Willara Troutman of Florida; brothers: Donnie (Anna) Burgess of Cades, SC, Wearly (Pearlie) Burgess of Lake City, SC, Ray Burgess of New York, Paul Burgess of Philadelphia, and Benjamin (Margaret) Burgess of Virginia; a special sister- in-law, Pearlie Burgess; special friends: Barbra Jones, Angela Smith, Andre Montgomery, Johnny Lee Singletary, Charlie and Keon Greene; a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A special thanks to Kindread At Home Care Service, Beth Moore (LPN) and Marsha Altman (RN), two nurses who kept him smiling every time they arrived. He loved to ride his bicycle and enjoyed being amongst family and friends. He will forever be missed but his memory will live on within our hearts.
