Michael Mills was born in Olanta, SC. He was born to the late Johnsie Lee Mills and the late Leo Capers, Sr. “Mike” as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was a product of the Olanta School System and graduate of Olanta High School. Mike played and coached several sports including softball and baseball. He was also well known for his skill on the grill. For over thirty years, Mike was employed by Lake City News & Post and Florence Morning News in Florence, SC. Throughout his long employment tenure, Mike held a variety of positions and roles before retiring in April 2019. He was a gentle giant, whose warm spirit and smile filled the air. He was a respectable and positive example for his family and his community.
It was in March 21, 1980 that he married Velia Mae and formed a beautiful family of five children: Pierre, Donna, Toby, Charles and Gregory. Mike was a great provider and was blessed with a large, loving family. He enjoyed the many family gatherings that he shared with them. On Saturday, May 9, 2020, Michael’s earthly life came to an end. He fought to the end with courage. It was time for him to take his well- deserved eternal rest.
Michael was predeceased in death by his beloved grandmother, Velia Mae Mills, mother Johnsie Lee, father, Leo Capers Sr, mother-in-law, Lillie Bell Nelson and fatherin-law, Heyward Nelson. Michael’s love, memory and example will forever be engraved in the heart of his wife Velia Mae; five children Pierre (Dwayne), Donna (Reginald), Toby (Latasha), Charles, and Gregory; his brothers Leo (Marisa), Timothy (Gail), Todd (Cornelia); sisters Coretta (James), and Sonja; his grandchildren Marlon, Alex, Ricky, Elijah, Ethan, and Ozias, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
